Addison Mitchell McConnell III, born on February 20, 1942, is an American politician and retired attorney, currently serving as Senate Minority Leader since 2021 and as the senior United States senator from Kentucky since 1985.

McConnell has held various leadership positions in the Senate, including minority leader from 2007 to 2015, majority leader from 2015 to 2021, and majority whip from 2003 to 2007.

Prior to his career in the Senate, McConnell served as a Deputy United States Assistant Attorney General under President Gerald Ford from 1974 to 1975.

McConnell was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984, becoming the second Kentuckian to serve as a party leader in the Senate.

He chaired the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the 1998 and 2000 election cycles and was elected Majority Whip to Bill Frist in the 108th Congress, later re-elected to the post in 2004.

In November 2006, he was elected Senate minority leader, a position he held until Republicans regained control of the Senate in 2015.

He led opposition to stricter campaign finance laws, which led to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. FEC in 2010.

Throughout the Obama administration, McConnell worked to withhold Republican support for major presidential initiatives, frequently using the filibuster and blocking many of President Obama’s judicial nominees, including Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland.

Mitch was previously married to his first wife, Sherrill Redmon, from 1968 to 1980.

However, Mitch and his second wife, Elaine Chao, whom he married in 1993, never had children together.

Elaine Chao is a Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush and Secretary of Transportation under President Donald Trump.

While Chao does not express outright regret over the decision of not having kids, she acknowledges that her career success may have come at the expense of starting a family.

Chao conveyed to CNN that she endeavors to minimize her regrets. She explained that in her generation, there was an expectation that individuals could achieve everything they desired, but she now recognizes the reality of trade-offs and sacrifices in life.

Chao aims to advise young women about the inevitability of making choices that may involve sacrifices, regardless of their aspirations.

When questioned if she recognized that she was making a trade-off herself concerning her political career, Chao shook her head and responded, “No, I didn’t.”

This friendship endured over the decades. In the early 1990s, Bloch extended an invitation to McConnell for a romantic dinner with himself, his wife Julia Chang, and Chang’s protégée, Elaine Chao.

While McConnell and Chao eventually formed a relationship, Bloch observed that there was no overt display of attraction between them on the night they first met.
