Herbert Wigwe was born on August 15, 1966, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He was raised in a family of intellectuals.
Wigwe completed his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Likewise, he graduated from the University College of North Wales in 1991.
There he received a degree of Master of Arts in Banking and Finance with the British Council scholarship.
Furthermore, Herbert graduated from the University of London in 1996 with an MSc in financial economics. He was also presented with an honorary doctorate from the University of Nigeria.
He began his career as a management consultant at Coopers & Lybrand, and by 1989 he was working as a Chartered Accountant there.
Herbert and his business partner Aigboje bought Access Bank in 2002. From years 2022 to 2014, he was deputy managing director of the company.

Herbert Wigwe Died In A Crash Alongside His Wife And Son
The CEO of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, with his wife Chizoba, son Chizi and former chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, lost their life on February 9, 2024, in a helicopter crash.
Reportedly, they were headed to Las Vegas for Super Bowl. However, the Eurocopter EC130 helicopter crashed around 10 pm, leading to the accident.
A few reports suggest the cause of the crash to be bad weather conditions, as it was snowing and raining that day. However, it is just a suggestion with no evidence.
Furthermore, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the National Transportation Safety Board are collaboratively investigating the crash to collect more information.
