Rex Heuermann is a figure steeped in notoriety as the prime suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings.

In an interview, Rex Heuermann introduced himself as a troubleshooter, born and raised on Long Island, and working in Manhattan since 1987.

His family’s connection to criminal activities is underscored by his brother, previously accused of killing a police captain in a drunk and drugged driving crash in Massapequa, as per court records.

The spotlight intensified on Heuermann when, on July 14, 2023, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney disclosed his arrest in connection to the murders of three women near Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York, between 2009 and 2010.

Heuermann faced charges in the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, and Megan Waterman, while the case of a fourth victim, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, remains under investigation.

The breakthrough in his arrest was linked to hair evidence found on the victims, allegedly connecting back to his wife, Asa Ellerup.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Heuermann has been labeled a “demon” and a “predator” by law enforcement officials.

Later in life, Rex married Asa Ellerup, his second wife. Asa, a former employee of Long Island Jewish Medical Center and Farmingdale High School alumna, also has ties to Iceland, as evident in her Facebook posts mentioning her native country.

Contrary to suspicions related to criminal activities, prosecutors established that Asa and their children were not present in New York State during three of the alleged murders.

Hairs found on the victims were linked to Rex, and prosecutors suggested they matched Asa’s, likely transferred from their residence or his clothing while she was away.
