Rashida Harbi Tlaib, the eldest of 14 children, was born on July 24, 1976, in Detroit, Michigan, U.S. into a working-class Palestinian immigrant family in Detroit.

Her mother, Fatima, hailed from Beit Ur El Foka, near the West Bank city of Ramallah. While, her father, Harbi Elabed, was born in Beit Hanina, a neighborhood in East Jerusalem, and initially moved to Nicaragua before settling in Detroit.

He worked on an assembly line at a Ford Motor Company plant. Given her position as the eldest sibling, Tlaib took on the responsibility of raising her brothers and sisters while her parents were at work.

Her schooling included Harms, Bennett Elementary, and Phoenix Academy for elementary education, and she graduated from Southwestern High School in Detroit in 1994.

Later, Tlaib earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Wayne State University in 1998, and she obtained her Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004.

After that, Tlaib was admitted to the bar in the state of Michigan in 2007.

Rashida Tlaib and Fayez Tlaib, now ex-husband, tied the knot in 1998. Rashida was only 22 years old when she was married.

Following their marriage, the couple had two sons- Adam and Yousif. Despite divorcing in 2015, Rashida Tlaib chose to retain her married name.

Tlaib came into highlight when she showed disappointment towards President, Joe Biden through one of her posts on Twitter.

She tweeted her disappointment with President Biden, saying that Israel bombed the Baptist Hospital, causing the death of 500 Palestinians, including doctors, children, and patients.

She pointed out @POTUS and blamed them for the output that was raised due to ignorance to facilitate a ceasefire and aid in de-escalation.

She further stated,

“Your approach of war and destruction has made me and many Palestinian Americans, as well as Muslim Americans like me, take notice. We will remember your position.”

Her remarks have certainly piqued interest in her personal life, with one notable aspect being her ex-husband, Fayez Tlaib.

Fayez is an American-Palestinian businessman and currently holds the CEO position at the Tlaib Automotive Collection.

Throughout Rashida’s political career, Fayez Tlaib has been recognized for supporting her campaigns and participating in her events.

His involvement extends to expressing disapproval of former President Donald Trump’s policies.

This suggests an active engagement in her political journey, indicating shared political views and convictions between the two.

Rashida Tlaib: U.S. House of Representatives

In 2018, Rashida Tlaib announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives in Michigan’s 13th congressional district.

The seat became vacant after longtime Representative John Conyers resigned in December 2017 amid a sexual harassment scandal.

Tlaib entered both the Democratic primary for the special election to complete Conyers’s 27th term and the general election for a full two-year term.

In the Democratic primary for the special election, Tlaib finished second to Detroit City Council president Brenda Jones. Jones received 32,727 votes (37.7%), while Tlaib secured 31,084 votes (35.9%).

Bill Wild, mayor of Westland, received 15.2% of the votes, and Ian Conyers, the great-nephew of former Congressman Conyers, took fourth place with 11.2%.

In the Democratic primary for the general election, Tlaib triumphed over five other candidates, securing 31.2% of the votes with 27,803 votes.

Facing no major-party opposition in the November 2018 general election, Rashida Tlaib became the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, winning the seat.

In the 2020 Democratic primary, she faced a challenge from Brenda Jones and won with 66% of the votes, spending over $2,000,000 in campaign funds compared to Jones’s $140,000.

In 2022, after redistricting, the 48-year-old sought reelection in Michigan’s newly drawn 12th congressional district.

Therefore, winning the Democratic primary with 64% of the vote over three challengers, she secured the general election with 71% of the vote against Republican Steven Elliott and Gary Walkowicz of the Working Class Party.
