Marla Gibbs was born Margaret Bradleyn on June 14, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, at Cook County Hospital.

Marla is the middle child of three sisters. And was raised in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the city’s south side.

Gibbs’ father, Douglas Bradley, was a self-taught mechanic originally from Waterproof, Louisiana. He owned an ice company and had Jamaican roots. Sadly, he passed away in 1947.

Her mother, Ophelia Birdie (nee kemp), was a businesswoman involved in the gambling trade, occasionally running numbers. She was of Haitian descent. She met her demise in 1967.

Following her elementary school graduation, Gibbs enrolled at St. Elizabeth High School. She completed her freshman year and the first semester of her sophomore year there.

However, Gibbs transferred to Wendell Phillips Academy High School midway through her sophomore year.
