Born on February 21, 1969, in San Fransico, California, the American actress studied at Brown University for a Bachelor of Arts in African American studies.
While being a student, Ellis acted for the first time in a college play. Later she did a Graduate Acting program at Tisch School of the Arts.
The Origin actress’ professional acting career began with the revival of “The Tempest” where she played the role of Ariel. She did her first ever television show in 1995 called “The New York Undercover” as Claudia.
Ellis’s most loved performance on television was a mini-series called “The Book of Negroes”. Furthermore, her first ever movie was “Girls Town” as Nikki.

Recently she penned a letter to “her daughters” named “My Bright, Black Future”. The letter focused on appreciating black women and their natural beauty instead of trying to change them.
Most importantly, it focused on why black women should get the exposure needed; hence, “her daughters” work is necessary.
The letter ended by referring to herself as “On screen Mama, Aunt on and off screen, and a friend for life” to her daughters in “King Richards.”
