Ilhan Abdullahi Omar has been a U.S. representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019. Along this journey, she has been a mother of three. Isra, Adnan, and Ilwad are Ilhan Omar Kids.
Ilhan Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on October 4, 1982. She spent her childhood years in Baidoa, Somalia.
Omar is the youngest of seven siblings, which includes her sister Sahra Noor. Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, belonged to the Majeerteen clan in Northeastern Somalia and served as a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre.
He also worked as a teacher trainer. Ilhan’s mother, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a Benadiri, passed away when Ilhan was two years old.
Raised by her father and grandfather, who were moderate Sunni Muslims opposed to the strict Wahhabi interpretation of Islam, Ilhan’s grandfather Abukar held the position of director at Somalia’s National Marine Transport.
Several of Omar’s uncles and aunts were employed as civil servants and educators.
Fleeing the Somali Civil War, Ilhan Omar and her family sought refuge and spent four years in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, near the Somali border.
Ilhan’s family obtained asylum in the United States, and they arrived in New York in 1995. Later, they resided in Arlington, Virginia for a period before eventually settling in Minneapolis.
In Minneapolis, her father initially worked as a taxi driver and later found employment with the post office.
Ilhan Omar obtained U.S. citizenship at the age of 17 in the year 2000. She attended Thomas Edison High School, graduating in 2001, where she also volunteered as a student organizer.
In 2011, she earned a bachelor’s degree, majoring in political science and international studies, from North Dakota State University.
Additionally, Omar served as a Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Upon completing high school in 2001, Ilhan Omar tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend, Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, in a religious ceremony, although the ceremony lacked legal validity.
At the time of the wedding, she was just 19 years old. In the same year, she embarked on a two-year program to earn an associate’s degree in accounting.
Shortly after their first wedding anniversary, Ilhan Omar gave birth to her daughter, Isra. However, the birth of her daughter, in 2003, posed challenges in completing her coursework.
While still working towards her associate’s degree, Omar faced health challenges; she was anemic and weighed around 89 lbs.

It was around this period that she made the personal decision to wear a hijab, a traditional Muslim head covering.
She emphasized that this choice was solely for herself and not influenced by external factors.
Consequently, Omar switched her major to business administration and successfully graduated in 2005, the same year she welcomed her son Adnan Hirsi into the world.
During this time, she took on a role as an instructor for a health and nutrition program targeting underserved communities through the University of Minnesota’s extension department.
In 2008, Ilhan Omar went through what she describes as an “early midlife crisis.” During this period, she felt overwhelmed by both domestic and community expectations, prompting her to question the purpose of her life.
In her own words, she reflects, “What was I living for? It wasn’t me.”
Ilhan Omar and Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi utilized Islamic procedures to dissolve their marriage.
Following this, Omar eloped with a friend, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. She enrolled in North Dakota State University in Fargo, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nutrition.
By 2012, Omar had graduated (2011) with a degree in political science and international studies.
During this time, she left Elmi, reconciled with Hirsi, and welcomed her third child, a daughter named Ilwad Hirsi.
In 2018, Ilhan Omar legally married Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi, but they divorced the following year.
In 2020, she married Tim Mynett, a political consultant who had been involved in Omar’s campaigns.
