Hydeia Broadbent, an American HIV/AIDS activist, dedicated her life to raising awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
She embarked on a nationwide journey, enlightening people of all ages about the perils of AIDS and methods to safeguard themselves from its transmission.
Hydeia, the founder of the Hydeia L. Broadbent Foundation, was actively engaged in speaking engagements at events like AIDS benefit concerts, documentaries, college campus education events, and talk shows.
Additionally, she was featured in Essence magazine and made appearances on The Maury Povich Show, Good Morning America, and at the 1996 Republican National Convention.
Sadly, she passed away on February 20, 2024, at the age of 39. The heartbreaking news was announced by her father, Loren Broadbent, on Facebook.

Hydeia Broadbent Brother Michael & Sister Briana
Like Hydeia, her half-brother Michael and sister Briana contracted HIV from their mother at birth.
Hydeia, left behind at the hospital by her birth mother, was raised and financially supported through her education by her loving adoptive parents, Loren and Patricia Broadbent.
The Broadbents kept in touch with Michael, 38, who is three years younger than Hydeia, and maintained contact with his adoptive mother.
Mike described his relationship with Hydeia as “complicated,” but emphasized their deep love for each other. He also expressed pride in her impactful work as an HIV/AIDS activist.
In addition to Hydeia, the Broadbents have four adopted children: Kendall, who became her adoptive brother, and Paige, Kimmie, who became her adoptive sisters and Briana, 39. Among the siblings, Patricia, 33 also fought against HIV.
Hydeia’s adoption and close bond with her siblings created a supportive environment that helped her navigate the challenges of living with HIV.
With her brother and sister, Hydeia found companionship, support, and unity, sharing their experiences with HIV/AIDS.
Their varied backgrounds didn't weaken their tight bond; love and determination united them in overcoming adversity.

Hydeia Broadbent, born on June 14, 1984, was initially placed in foster care and later adopted by Loren and Patricia Broadbent, who found out about her HIV-positive status three years after her adoption.
Contracting HIV at birth from her drug-addicted biological mother, she fought the disease with the support of her adoptive parents ever since.
Despite the initial hardships of her infancy, Hydeia found love and support within her adoptive family.
Her birth mother also gave birth to another child, Michael, at the Las Vegas hospital and left him there just like Hydeia.
In hopes of finding a viable treatment, Hydeia’s adoptive mother enlisted her in a research trial. Although expected not to live beyond age 5, she surpassed predictions.
Hydeia’s adoptive parents, Loren worked as a glass contractor, while Patricia became a supervisor at a printing plant after leaving her social work role.
Diana Dowling, Michael’s adoptive mother, took on the responsibility of caring for him. Diana stood up for Hydeia amidst discrimination from her school district.
Despite the absence of information about her biological father, Hydeia’s family tree is rich with love, resilience, and the enduring bonds forged through shared experiences and unwavering support, demonstrating the power of family in overcoming adversity and fostering hope for the future.
