Wendy Williams parents, Shirley Williams and Thomas Williams, had a combined three master’s degrees.

Wendy Joan Williams, an American former broadcaster, media personality, and writer, was born on July 18, 1964, in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Two weeks after graduating from Northeastern, Williams embarked on her career as a disc jockey at WVIS, a small radio station in Frederiksted, U.S. Virgin Islands, which focused on calypso and reggae music.

However, she found the role unsatisfying as she felt she didn’t learn much about radio from her colleagues, and due to low pay and being far from her family, she began sending out resumes and demo tapes to other radio stations.

She then secured a position at WOL in Washington, D.C., but found its oldies radio format didn’t suit her personality.

Continuing to send tapes to other stations, Williams began as a weekend fill-in at New York City’s WQHT on November 1, 1987.

She was eventually hired full-time to work overnight shifts but was fired from WQHT after two years.

She briefly worked overnight shifts at WPLJ before being hired by WRKS. Initially, she worked as a fill-in but eventually secured a permanent morning position in May 1990, joining Jeff Foxx and Spider Webb as part of the station’s “Wake-Up Club“.

Williams gained attention for her segment “Dish the Dirt“, where she gossiped about rappers and celebrities, despite receiving backlash from some of the subjects.

As her popularity grew, she moved to host the evening drive time slot in April 1991. By 1993, she was the highest-rated host in her time slot in the New York City market and received a Billboard Radio Award for R&B Major Market Radio Air Personality of the Year.

Wendy Williams is the daughter of Shirley (nee Skinner) and Thomas Dwayne Williams. She is the middle child among three siblings.

Wendy Williams parents, Shirley and Thomas held a total of three master’s degrees between them.

Shirley worked as a special education teacher, while Thomas served as both a teacher and school principal.

Notably, Thomas became the first black school administrator in Red Bank, New Jersey, in 1969.

Following racial unrest in Asbury Park in 1970, the family relocated to Wayside, a predominantly white, upper-middle-class suburb in Ocean Township, New Jersey.

They were active members of a Baptist church and made annual summer visits to Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.

Williams’ mother was born on May 20, 1935, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She graduated from Newark State Teacher’s College, now known as Kean University, with a teaching degree in 1957.

Shirley went on to earn her master’s degree in special education, as mentioned in her obituary.

In 1957, she married Thomas D. Williams, Jr., her husband of 63 years, and the couple relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In December 2020, the TV personality shared with her viewers that her mother had passed away “beautifully and peacefully.”

Her return to the Wendy Williams Show after a three-week hiatus to mourn her loss was marked by the first episode of 2021 on January 4.

During this episode, the grieving TV star revealed to her audience that her mother passed away many, many weeks ago.
