At the age of 12, she collaborated with her mother and brother Jacques to create her first song, “Ce n’était qu’un rêve,” which translates to “It Was Only a Dream” or “Nothing But A Dream.”

Dion’s popularity extended globally when she participated in the 1982 Yamaha World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, winning the musician’s award for “Top Performer” and the gold medal for “Best Song” with “Tellement j’ai d’amour pour toi.”

By 1983, she had become the first Canadian artist to earn a gold record in France for the single “D’amour ou d’amitié” (“Of Love or of Friendship”).

Céline Dion, 56, was born as the youngest child to her parents, Adhémar Dion, a musician, and butcher, and Thérèse Dion (nee Tanguay), a TV personality.

She grew up with her 14 siblings, including Denise, Clément, Claudette, Liette, Michel, Louise, Jacques, Daniel, Ghislaine, Linda, Manon, and twins Paul and Pauline. All of the Dion siblings shared an involvement in music.

Music held a significant role in the Dion family, and Céline was named after the song Céline, recorded by French singer Hugues Aufray two years prior to her birth.

On August 13, 1973, she made her initial public appearance at her brother Michel’s wedding, captivating the audience with her rendition of Christine Charbonneau’s song Du fil, des aiguilles et du coton.

Céline continued to showcase her musical talents alongside her siblings in her parents’ quaint piano bar, known as Le Vieux Baril, or “The Old Barrel.”

Céline’s exposure to the art of live performances came through her siblings, who played a significant role in her early experiences.

In a 1994 interview, she mentioned, that she’d sleep on chairs in restaurants and bars while her siblings sang.

Her brother Michel shared in a 1997 interview, that they helped their mother take care of Celine, while she was busy doing her chores.

Additionally, when he was in a rock and roll band, he would bring Celine along to his gigs.

Celine Dion has a French-Canadian heritage, and in addition to that, she has noted ancestry that includes being 1/128th Scottish and 1/512th Portuguese.

She was born and raised in Charlemagne, Quebec, Canada, making her a Canadian citizen.

The Grammy award winner was brought up in a Roman Catholic household in Charlemagne, which, despite economic challenges, she described as a joyful home.
